Why call it, Kitchener stitch?

There are a lot of terms, which with knitting come, and sometimes they are curious. Why is two pieces of knitting mattress sewing together stitch? (I really know the answer, that a.) There was a person named Kitchener, and what he with knitting, so that we now sometimes call have Stoppers a toe or other seams to do the Kitchener stitch?

There was actually a guy named Kitchener, Horatio Herbert Kitchener, in fact and tradition says knitting, that he wore a knitting pattern as part of the war effort in World War I, which is a refined toe involved, instead of a foot with seam as was common at that time. It is not really known if there is truth to this story, but it sounds good to me.

What is known to the person of Kitchener, is that his image, a world war recruiting poster, who has stolen the Americans has been used in the development of "Uncle Sam wants you"-posters. So even though the Kitchener/knit connection is shaky, is a good reason, know a little something about this military man.
